Working as part of the engineering team, this is a crucial role developing designs from concept through to production.
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Reporting to the Mechanical Team Leader and working within the multi-disciplinary engineering team.
With excellent communication and problem-solving skills, you should be able to prioritise and manage your own workload with great attention to detail.
Required:
- Mechanical engineering degree, either BSc/BEng or MEng.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software.
- 10 years' experience.
Essential skills in any of the following areas:

- Rotordynamics - Shaft stress analysis
- Balancing
- Computational Fluid Dynamics
- Motor drive architecture
- Motor design and/or electronic enclosures
- Electronic power device functionality/Cooling methods
- Carbon fibre/Magnet retention
Experience and personal attributes:
- DFM/DFA/DFV.
- DFMEA.
- Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) - 3D Experience, Team Centre, etc.
- Microsoft Office (Word, PPT, Excel, Projects).
- Excellent communication skills within multi-disciplinary team and with external customers.
- Self-starter, able to prioritise and plan effectively and manage own workload.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a creative approach for new ideas.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Confident in use of basic workshop tools and processes.
- Proven experience of developing electro-mechanical components within the automotive sector or similar.
- Good understanding of solid body dynamics, structures and materials, heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
- 3D CAD modelling (Solidworks desirable) and GD&T as per BS 8888.
Responsibilities:
- Organise and lead mechanical engineers to fulfil numerous orders and projects.
- Developing designs from concept through to production intent.
- Creating CAD models and fully detailed engineering drawings using GD&T.

- High speed compressors
- Enclosures for power electronics
- Cooling structures
- Testing hardware, prototypes, jigs & fixtures
- Liaising with members of the wider engineering team, as well as external suppliers.
- Work with Mechanical Team Leader to continue to build and develop the mechanical engineering team to fulfil company strategic road map.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to other mechanical engineers.
- Ensure products are developed to achieve compliance with automotive requirements.
- Provide technical liaison and support for customers.
- Contribute to the creation of FMEA's.
- Participate in problem solving processes, such as 8Ds.
- Create/Review tolerance stack-ups.
- Create/Review and sign off reports, drawings, designs and calculations.
- Identify opportunities for improvements in functionality and manufacture.
- Create DVP&R plan for setup and running a test cell for validation work.
Salary
Range £50-60k depending on experience.
